GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI – Based on a true character in the late 50’s – Gangubai is a story of a young girl who dreams of becoming a movie star at a young age in Bombay, only than to be deceived and be forced into prostitution. That poor girl later becomes a madam and runs the the brothel, and then runs for elections to do help protect her 4000 women and children by getting them their dignity, freedom, education, and self-respect.
All of these things are a herculean task, which has been brilliantly portrayed by Alia Bhatt. she is a powerhouse of talent. This is one of her finest performances after “RAAZI”. She deserves best actress award for this film especially as well. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film has been well executed, with the right performances and good dialogues with passion invoked as well.
Supporting cast with Ajay Devgn in a cameo as a Mafia Don who protects “Gangubai” from her adversaries”, is very good. Seema Pawha & Vijay Raaz as her foes give that added zing to the film.
She tries for legalizing prostitution, but towards the end that does not happen with an appeal to the Prime Minister by her. Towards the end with that request, the climax of the film gets a bit diluted. The music could have had more impact, but these minor blemishes become forgotten, when you see Alia Bhatt’s electrifying performance.
