By Arun Sajnani,

SAMRAT PRITHVIRAJ – I actually did not know much about the life of The King of Ajmer, “PRITHVIRAJ CHAUHAN”. Set in 1192 A.D.,  the film shows the story of a true warrior with modern views on how to rule a kingdom, and treat woman with equality. He lived by his virtue  that duty is above all, and give refuge to enemies that seek forgiveness.

Director Chanderprakash Dwiwedi of “Pinjar” fame depicts “SAMRAT PRITHVIRAJ” with opulence and and its visuals on a grand scale. Its a big budget film that stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Sakshi Talwar, Manav Vij and introducing Manushi Chillar as the leading lady. There are some great “Gladiator” action sequences in the beginning that have been well executed. The film is educational, inspiring, and complex for a warrior, who later became a king.

Prithviraj for him in that era to evolve and change ideologies that were once considered unchangeable was a noble and a tough task to accomplish.. Even the complexities of marrying your enemies daughter and sharing a princely state like Delhi, was creating havoc for Prithviraj. To protect one’s sovereignty is one’s birth right. To protect your motherland from intruders, and in those days, “Hindustan – India” had many intruders from the outside, like the Persians, the Afghans, and the Moghuls, that wanted the country at all costs.

Akshay played the role well, only I wish his Marathi diction was like Ranveer in “Bhajirao Mastani”. then it would have had that authenticity. Sonu Sood as his poet and good friend was good in a supporting role, along with Sanjay Dutt in the role of Prithviraj’s uncle. But even here Sanjay Dutt as “Kaka”, also has a tapori accent that does not suit that character from being of that period of time.

But the real highlight was the sweet and simpleness of Manushi Chillar’s role. She had grace and after Tabu & Deepika Padukone, she has the essence of what a traditional Indian woman should be. It has all the elements of “Jodha Akbar”, “Bhajirao Mastani”,”Kesari” and “Padmavat”, but despite having said that, “SAMRAT PRITHVIRAJ” holds its own presence for the Big Screen”
