Lights, camera, Canada! The 2025 Canadian Screen Awards just wrapped up in Toronto, and the CBC Broadcast Centre was buzzing. It was a fantastic night celebrating the best in Canadian film, TV, and digital media, filled with heartfelt speeches and a few unexpected wins.
The big winner on the film side was Universal Language (Une langue universelle). It took home five major awards, including Best Editing and Best Art Direction. Honestly, the film’s storytelling and visuals were just stunning, making it a clear standout.
For TV, comedy definitely ruled. This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which has been making us laugh for years, snagged a bunch of awards, including Best Sketch Comedy Program and Best Performance by an Ensemble. The show’s smart humor and takes on current events are still totally on point.
Sebastian Stan also got some serious love, winning Best Lead Performance for his role in The Apprentice. It’s another example of how Canadian talent can really shine internationally.
Some other highlights? Mae Martin: The Gala won Best Comedy Special, and The Fifth Estate grabbed Best News Series for its super compelling investigative work.
The awards also honored some real difference-makers, with Marsha Greene, the showrunner for The Porter, receiving the Changemaker Award. It was great to see her recognized for her amazing work and her commitment to diversity in storytelling.
From powerful performances to laugh-out-loud comedy and important journalism, the 2025 Canadian Screen Awards showed that Canada’s entertainment scene is thriving!
