Lena Dunham’s Netflix rom-com series Too Much will not be returning for a second season, as the show’s creator has confirmed the story was always intended to be a limited series. The ten-episode romantic comedy, starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe, concluded with a fairytale wedding for its central couple, Jessica and Felix, bringing their whirlwind romance full circle. Dunham, who based the series on her own relationship with husband Luis Felber, said the series did what it set out to do, and it’s time to “park it” creatively.
Lena Dunham said at a recent FYC panel that Too Much was always envisioned as a limited series. The show navigates the ups and downs of a transatlantic love affair between Jessica, a New York workaholic who moves to London after a breakup, and Felix, a charming but troubled musician.
The two get together with swift and relentless speed, getting married by season’s end. Dunham said the finale was written and directed to feel complete, even down to a minor Easter egg: if you listen closely, you can hear her yell “cut!” at the very end of the final scene, to indicate the end of the story.
The finale was somewhat open-ended, allowing audiences to question the future of the couple, but Dunham and her creative team felt satisfied they had told a story worth telling. “We realized we had completed the story. It concludes with a wedding. There’s a little egg: in the final scene, you can hear me yell ‘cut!’ We accomplished what we set out to do, part of the job is when to stop,” Dunham said.
