Scarlett Johansson Stars in Mike Flanagan’s New Exorcist Movie

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson will star in a new version of “The Exorcist,” written, directed, and produced by leading horror talent Mike Flanagan. The project, from Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, is designed to rejuvenate the classic horror franchise after the poor post-performance of the last version.

The forthcoming film will not be a remake or direct sequel but will take place inside the “Exorcist” universe. Johansson’s casting signals the studio’s commitment to giving the franchise a new identity. The plot and other cast remain secret, but filming is expected shortly in New York.

Flanagan said the film is his scariest to date; he intended to do something different, more disturbingly realistic, while paying homage to the source material and creating something entirely new. He followed up by stating Johansson has an on-screen presence he finds compellingly authentic and that he cannot wait to get to work with her.

The past outing, “Exorcist: Believer,” from Blumhouse did poorly at the box office, earning a mere $136.2 million worldwide. “With Johansson aboard, fresh from reviving the “Jurassic World” franchise, the studio is optimistic about box office and critical success this time.”

The project is Johansson’s first major role in a horror franchise, adding to her diversified portfolio. She has multiple award nominations, a BAFTA, and a Tony Award. Her upcoming screen appearances include “Ray Gunn” and “Paper Tiger.”

At present, no release date is confirmed, and the nature of Johansson’s character is not disclosed. The direction signals a radical new chapter for the franchise.
