Zootopia 2 opened to a whopping $39 million opening day at the domestic box office on Wednesday, a near record for the day before Thanksgiving and third-best start ever among all Walt Disney Animation Studios titles. The animated sequel overperformed all expectations with $10.2 million in strong previews, an A CinemaScore, and glowing audience scores. The global opening was $81.1 million, powered by a record-breaking opening of $34 million in China—the best ever for a US animated film.
Wicked: For Good Holds Strong Hold
Universal’s Wicked: For Good added $17.2 million on Wednesday to take its North American total past $194.6 million just one week into release, and is projected to soar past $200 million by Thanksgiving. The musical sequel with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo opened with the largest opening ever for a Broadway adaptation and continues to cast a spell with an A CinemaScore and 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It eyes $93 million over a five-day Thanksgiving stretch, which would take its domestic haul past $268 million.
International Box Office Highlights
Zootopia 2 had leading animated bows in all key overseas markets including France, Germany, Italy, and South Korea, all of which were not on holiday timing. In China, where it bowed at $33.93 million, the opening ranks as the second-best for a Hollywood film in the post-COVID era, propelled by 266,000 screenings and great audience scores (Maoyan 9.7, Douban 8.7). Wicked: For Good was tops in the U.K. with a record $24.4 million November opening, fueled by $21.1 million from IMAX.
