Inter Miami CF won their first MLS Cup on December 6, 2025, beating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lionel Messi had two important assists in the second half, which helped the Herons win the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy in their sixth MLS season. Inter Miami is now the 16th MLS Cup champion, having won the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield as well.
In the eighth minute, Édier Ocampo of Vancouver scored an own goal off a cross from Tadeo Allende, which was set up by Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. Ali Ahmed’s powerful shot past goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo in the 60th minute tied the game for Vancouver. Messi then set up the game-winning goal in the 71st minute after stealing the ball in the middle of the field. He also set up Allende’s record eighth playoff goal in the 96th minute.
Messi was named the MLS Cup 2025 MVP for his performance, which included 15 goals and 9 assists, the most in playoff history. He won the MLS Golden Boot during the regular season with 29 goals and 19 assists.
Moreover, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets retire as champions. Inter Miami will open Miami Freedom Park in April 2026. Messi’s contract runs through 2028, which puts the club in a good position to keep winning. Ryan Gauld and Ali Ahmed from Vancouver played well, but they couldn’t beat Miami’s stars.
