Microsoft is making its biggest investment in Asia by putting $17.5 billion into AI infrastructure, cloud expansion, and training programs in India over the next four years. After CEO Satya Nadella met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this move builds on a promise of $3 billion made in January 2025.
The money is aimed at three main goals: building hyperscale cloud infrastructure for AI scalability, creating sovereign-ready AI solutions for data trust, and teaching 20 million Indians by 2030—doubling previous goals. Microsoft adds Azure AI to India’s Ministry of Labour and National Career Service platforms, making government work better. Other plans include Microsoft 365 Copilot, which will process data in the country by the end of 2025 for industries like BFSI and healthcare.
Google promised $15 billion and AWS promised $8 billion for new data centers, making India a global center for AI. Microsoft’s investment brings its total commitment to AI in India to $20.5 billion, which supports more than 22,000 jobs in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said it was proof that India’s technology is reliable.
