Mariah Carey’s famous Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has reached a historic milestone by spending a record-breaking 20 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, beating all other songs that have been at the top of the charts. The song came out in 1994 on her album Merry Christmas. It first made it into the Hot 100 top 10 in 2017, and it has been a holiday favorite ever since, thanks to streaming and radio airplay.
Carey has now held the Hot 100 longevity record for the second time. Her song “One Sweet Day,” which she made with Boyz II Men in 1995–96, stayed at the top for 16 weeks. The song is now Carey’s 19th No. 1 overall, which is the most for any solo artist and just one less than The Beatles’ record of 20. It has been at the top for four decades: the 1990s, the 2000s, the 2010s, and the 2020s. It has also spent 77 weeks on the chart, which is the same amount of time as Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” making it the longest-charting song by a female artist.
The song got back to number one for the seventh time over the holidays just a few weeks ago. It tied the previous record of 19 weeks before breaking it on the December 20, 2025 chart. Seven of the top ten songs on the Hot 100 that week were holiday songs. This shows how much more popular holiday music is during the holidays. Carey’s classic song is still a staple on Christmas playlists around the world, even 31 years after it first came out.
