Alec Baldwin said that after the charges were refiled in the deadly Rust shooting case, he had very strong thoughts of killing himself. The actor talked about these things on a podcast hosted by Dave Manheim, which showed how deeply they affected him and his family.
Baldwin said he couldn’t move and often sat in corners while his kids watched him in pain. He said that his wife and kids were the source of his deepest pain and that the ordeal left him so mentally drained that he needed to take naps every day for a year.
In 2021, a prop gun on the set of Rust fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
In July 2024, Baldwin’s charges of involuntary manslaughter were dropped because the defense said the prosecution had acted improperly by not giving them evidence. Kari Morrissey, the special prosecutor, dropped the appeal in December 2024, ending the criminal case for good.
Hilaria Baldwin has talked about her husband’s PTSD diagnosis after the incident. She said that sometimes he feels better when he’s asleep than when he’s awake. She showed text messages in which Alec said he wanted to kill himself and was dealing with survivor’s guilt.
