Billy Porter’s Challenging Sepsis Recovery Update

Billy Porter says he is on the road to full recovery from a severe case of urosepsis that put him in the hospital this fall and kept him from performing in the Broadway revival of Cabaret. In a heartfelt Instagram video shared on December 22, 2025, the Tony-winning actor said that the last four months had been “very, very challenging.”

Porter, 56, was diagnosed with urosepsis, a life-threatening urinary tract infection that leads to sepsis, in September 2025. He had to go to the hospital right away. Doctors gave him antibiotics and IV fluids, and they were sure he would fully recover. They told him to rest, which ended his run as Emcee in Cabaret early on September 21. He thanked his fans for their prayers and said he felt “every single one” of them during this time.

The Cabaret show at the August Wilson Theatre ended weeks early because Porter got sick and ticket sales slowed down. This was a sad end to his return to Broadway. Porter still talks about his upcoming projects, like Amazon Prime’s Christmas Karma and Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Porter wished his fans a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwanzaa, and more in his holiday message. He wrote “She’s ALIVE!!!” on the post to show that he was strong during his recovery. Even though he’s not fully healed, his update shows that he’s getting better after a condition that can cause organ failure if not treated.
