The former One Direction star and solo artist was seen in the huge crowds in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, where white smoke signaled the selection of the new pope. This caused a frenzy among fans and photos to go viral.
Styles told the story by chance during a new BBC Radio 1 interview about his new single “Aperture.” “I was getting my hair cut in Rome. I suddenly heard a crowd shout “Habemus papam!” “Habemus papam!” people yelled as they ran down the street, he said. His barber even stopped cutting his hair to join in the chants, which were in Latin and meant “We have a pope!” Styles then walked over to see the exciting moment just five minutes later.
The 31-year-old singer, who had just come back from a break from music after his Love On Tour, said the vibe was “surreal” and completely unplanned. Fans had been talking about it online since the May 7–8 conclave after Pope Francis’s predecessor died.
