Kristen Stewart Slams Hollywood’s ‘Puppet’ Treatment of Actresses

Kristen Stewart, who is famous for her role in Twilight, has strongly criticized Hollywood’s attitude toward female actors. She said that actresses are treated badly and are often seen as “puppets” who don’t think for themselves. She says this view comes from myths in the male-dominated industry. When she started directing, everything changed.

Stewart gained new respect while promoting her first movie as a director, The Chronology of Water. “She said in a recent interview, “The first time I sat down to talk about my movie as a director, I thought, wow, this is a different experience—they are talking to me like I’m somebody with a brain.” She says that directors get credit for “otherworldly abilities,” but actors, especially women, don’t.

The Chronology of Water is a biographical drama from 2025 based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir. It stars Imogen Poots and Thora Birch. It first showed at Cannes in May 2025 and then came out in theaters in October. It follows Yuknavitch’s journey through abuse, addiction, swimming, trauma, and redemption. Stewart praised Poots for putting “her whole body and soul” into the role, which goes against the stereotype of puppets.

Kristen Stewart, who stars in Twilight, has strongly criticized Hollywood for treating female actors like “puppets” while directors get instant respect. In a recent interview, the 35-year-old actor-turned-director said that people think “anyone could be an actress,” which makes people less likely to take women in the industry seriously. She said there was a big change: for the first time, talking about her first time directing felt like talking to “someone with a brain.”
