Melania Movie Box Office: $8M Opening Sparks Buzz

Amazon MGM’s “Melania” documentary is on track to make about $8 million in its first weekend in North America across 1,778 theaters. This is a strong start for a political documentary after its premiere in Washington D.C. with President Donald Trump and his supporters. Early Friday returns and pre-sales of almost $1 million put it ahead of recent documentaries like Angel Studios’ “After Death,” which made $5 million. However, estimates range from $1 million to $2 million by Box Office Pro to $5 million by National Research Group. Despite weak international sales, turnout is high in Republican states thanks to grassroots efforts from conservative groups and support from the White House.

Brett Ratner directed the movie, which is almost two hours long. It follows Melania Trump during the 20 days before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. It was made under her Muse Films banner. Amazon paid $40 million for the rights and $35 million for marketing, for a total cost of about $75 million, with the goal of a worldwide theatrical release. Trump helped with things like the trailer, music, and logo, and Melania hopes it will inspire women who are trying to balance work and family.

Trump praised Melania’s impact at the D.C. premiere and dedicated the night to her. The couple answered questions from the media for 34 minutes.
