Pratibha Ranta on Choosing Accused After Laapataa Ladies: “I Wanted to Stand Out as an Artist”

Rising actor Pratibha Ranta is quickly becoming one of the most exciting new faces in Indian cinema. After winning hearts with her performance in Laapataa Ladies, she is now taking a bold step with her next project, Accused.

Recently, the actor opened up about why she chose such an unconventional film. More importantly, she explained how she wanted to challenge herself creatively rather than repeat what had already worked.

Life After Laapataa Ladies

Directed by Kiran Rao, Laapataa Ladies became a widely loved film. It also introduced audiences to Pratibha Ranta’s strong screen presence. Naturally, the success of the film raised expectations for the young actor.

However, along with appreciation came pressure.

Ranta admitted that the overwhelming response to her debut made her question what to do next.

“There was so much love coming in. My debut set a very high standard. I kept wondering if I would ever find something that could achieve what Laapataa Ladies did,” she shared.

As a result, she spent several months reading scripts. Yet, despite many opportunities, finding the right project proved difficult.

Why Accused Felt Like the Right Choice

Eventually, the script of Accused, directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, immediately caught her attention. Unlike many other offers, this story felt personal and exciting.

According to Ranta, the script instantly drew her into its world.

“When I read the script, I felt a connection right away. I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I can see myself in this world,’” she recalled.

In addition, she appreciated the calm and collaborative atmosphere during the shoot.

“There was complete silence on set. Nobody was shouting. There was no chaos. It was rare and very refreshing,” she said.

Taking a Chance on an Unconventional Role

In Accused, Ranta plays one half of a lesbian couple. Their relationship faces a major challenge when one partner is accused of sexual harassment at the workplace.

Because of the sensitive and bold storyline, some people around her were unsure about the decision. In fact, many questioned whether she should take such a risk so early in her career.

Nevertheless, the actor chose to follow her instincts.

“People asked me if I was sure about doing a film like this. They said it was a big risk,” she said.

However, Ranta was clear about her intention.

“I didn’t want to repeat myself. I wanted to stand out as an artist. And this story felt right.”

Working Alongside Konkona Sen Sharma

Another highlight of the project was sharing screen space with acclaimed actor Konkona Sen Sharma. Known for choosing meaningful and layered roles, Sharma left a lasting impression on Ranta.

Initially, the young actor admitted she felt nervous about meeting her co-star.

“I remember being nervous before meeting her. But she gave me so much space as an artiste to perform. That really helped me,” she said.

Furthermore, the two actors built a comfortable bond off-screen as well.

“After pack-up, she would suggest going for walks. Those conversations helped us understand each other better,” Ranta shared.

According to her, that comfort eventually reflected in their on-screen chemistry.

“A secure actor always makes sure that the co-actor also feels safe.”

Exploring the Complexities of Love and Trust

At its core, Accused explores the complicated emotional dynamics within relationships. The story highlights how love and trust are tested when serious allegations emerge.

For Ranta, this emotional conflict is what makes the narrative powerful.

“When you love someone, you naturally give them the benefit of doubt. It’s not easy to suddenly believe they could do something wrong,” she explained.

At the same time, the film shows how difficult it can be to navigate such situations.

“You want to stand by them. You don’t want to give up easily,” she added.

What’s Next for Pratibha Ranta?

Meanwhile, Pratibha Ranta is already moving on to another exciting project. After Accused, she will appear in The Revolutionaries directed by Nikkhil Advani.

With bold choices and diverse roles, Ranta appears determined to build a career defined by versatility. And if her recent decisions are any indication, the rising star is only getting started.
