Authorities looking for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie now say that the person who took her could “absolutely” go after someone else if he isn’t caught soon. Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of “Today,” went missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona, in early February and has not been seen since.
Chris Nanos, the sheriff of Pima County, said that investigators think Nancy was probably “targeted.” He also said that no one in the community should feel safe until the suspect is caught. He told NBC News, “It would be stupid to tell people, ‘Don’t worry about it, you’re not his target.'” He also said that the kidnapper could “absolutely” strike again.
Other experts and former FBI agents have said the same thing, warning that the kidnapper could be a murderer and is planning another attack. A former FBI agent said that blood evidence and other clues at Guthrie’s home suggest she didn’t leave on her own. He also compared the case to other targeted but very violent kidnappings.
Researchers have found “mixed” DNA inside Guthrie’s Tucson home and are hoping that more advanced forensic testing will help them find a suspect. In the meantime, Guthrie’s family and the police are still asking the public for information, and the media is giving the case a lot of attention.
Sheriff Nanos has said that detectives think they know why Guthrie was taken and that the person who did it had a specific target in mind. However, he warned that this does not mean that others in the area are safe. Experts say that the biggest worry as the search goes on without an arrest is that a dangerous criminal is still free and could take the chance to kidnap or hurt someone else.
