Sarah Michelle Gellar said that Hulu has decided not to go ahead with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot called New Sunnydale. The actress told her fans the bad news directly through an Instagram video on March 14, 2026. She said she wanted them to hear it from her first. This is the end of a project she had been working on for more than a year.
Hulu was working on the reboot, and Gellar was going to play Buffy Summers again in a recurring role. The project had gotten as far as setting up offices and even filming a pilot with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao on board. 20th Television had tried to do it before in 2018, but it didn’t work.
Fans left angry and sad comments on Gellar’s post, and some even joked that they would still “beep” her if the world ended. Hulu has passed on this version, but there are still questions about possible future Buffyverse projects in other places. In her message, Gellar thanked Zhao for working together.
