Dwayne Johnson’s Epic Maui Makeover in Moana Live-Action Trailer

Disney has released the long-awaited official trailer for the live-action version of Moana. It features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the demigod Maui and newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as the adventurous Moana. The video shows Moana and Maui leaving the island of Motunui to lift a curse and bring back prosperity. It has amazing visuals of tattoos, shape-shifting, and well-known villains like Tamatoa and Te Kā.

Fans are most excited about Johnson’s dramatic change: he traded his trademark bald look for long, flowing brown hair that has gotten a lot of funny online comments comparing it to a “Pretty Woman” wig. Johnson talked about the physical challenges of the role, such as gaining 40 pounds of prosthetics and muscle to play the larger-than-life character.

Directed The movie was directed by Emmy winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton) and stars John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. The music is by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. Moana, made by Johnson and others, will be in theaters on July 10, 2026.
