Netflix has officially given the go-ahead for City Hunter 2, the long-awaited sequel to its hit 2024 live-action adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s famous manga. Production is now happening in Japan. Ryohei Suzuki returns as the charming but silly private eye Ryo Saeba. Misato Morita plays the tough partner Kaori Makimura. Fumino Kimura plays the sharp-tongued detective Saeko Nogami. The movie promises to be the “most quintessential version of City Hunter yet.” It builds on the original’s huge success around the world. In fact, it was the number one non-English film on Netflix in 32 countries.
Keiichiro Shiraki, who is known for high-tension action, directed City Hunter 2. It was written by Jumpei Yamaoka. The movie moves from the first film’s origin story to deeper explorations of the manga’s Shinjuku world. Shinichi Takahashi, Netflix Japan’s live-action creative director, called it a big deal. He said this because it was the first sequel to a Japanese original film on the service. Shooting is already going on, and the movie is set to come out worldwide in 2027.
On April 25, 2024, the first episode of City Hunter aired. It caused a spike in manga sales and received praise for Suzuki’s portrayal of the marksman playboy. He teamed up with Kaori to look into her brother’s death. It was Japan’s first live-action version of the franchise. The story mixes action-comedy with crime thriller elements. In this sequel, fans can expect higher stakes and more complicated character relationships.
