Actress Aarvika Gupta is receiving widespread praise for her portrayal of Champa, a drug-addicted, HIV-positive sex worker, in the new web series Chidiya Udd. Here’s a closer look at her intense preparation, her thoughts on OTT platforms, and her journey to this groundbreaking role.
Auditioning for a Life-Changing Role
Aarvika’s journey to Chidiya Udd began with an audition she almost forgot about. “I auditioned through a casting agency, but after not hearing back, I moved on. Then, out of the blue, Omkar Ji from Baweja Studios called me. I was thrilled,” she recalls. The role of Champa—a woman on the brink of death—was challenging, but Aarvika was excited to take it on. “As an actor, I seek roles that push my limits and allow me to do something impactful,” she adds.
Immersing in the Character
Aarvika’s preparation for Champa was unique. “I didn’t have a set plan, but once I stepped into costume and makeup, the character started to come alive. Filming in Kamathipura, a real red-light area, added another layer of authenticity,” she explains. The location allowed her to experience the harsh realities of the world Champa inhabits, making her performance more grounded and raw.
Physical Preparation: Going to Extremes
To authentically portray Champa’s frailty, Aarvika took extreme measures. “I didn’t eat or drink water until the shoot was done. I felt weak and restless, which reflected on my face,” she says. This physical discomfort helped her stay in character and convey the vulnerability of an HIV-positive person.
She also avoided socializing on set, focusing solely on her performance. “I wanted to stay in the moment and give an honest portrayal,” she adds.
OTT Platforms: A Game Changer
With the rise of OTT platforms, shows like Chidiya Udd are reaching more viewers. Aarvika is excited that the series is available for free on platforms like Amazon. “More people are watching and appreciating the show,” she says, emphasizing the importance of streaming in bringing diverse content to a wider audience.
No Bold Scenes: Staying True to the Character
Although OTT shows often feature bold scenes, Aarvika’s character didn’t involve any. “Champa is dying, and her struggle with addiction is the focus. I didn’t think about boldness; I focused on portraying the character’s pain,” she says. Aarvika is clear about maintaining boundaries in her roles. “I choose roles I’d be proud for my parents to watch,” she adds.
Positive Reactions to Her Performance
Aarvika has been overwhelmed by the positive feedback for her portrayal of Champa. “People sympathize with her but also question her choices, like betraying her friend for drugs. I’m glad my performance felt real,” she says.
The actress is particularly honored by comparisons to Sayani Gupta. “Some people said Sayani would have played the role similarly. Being compared to her is a huge compliment,” Aarvika smiles.
Future Projects and Career Growth
Looking ahead, Aarvika is eager to take on more challenging roles. Her portrayal of Champa has cemented her place as a versatile talent in the Indian entertainment industry.
