Arvind Vaidya Receives Padma Shri; Rupali Ganguly & Rajan Shahi Call It “Well-Deserved”

Mumbai, February 2026 – Veteran actor Arvind Vaidya, widely loved as Hasmukh or Babuji from Anupamaa, has been honoured with the Padma Shri, marking a historic milestone in his six-decade-long career. Fellow actors and producers, including Rupali Ganguly and Rajan Shahi, have lauded the award as “well-deserved.”

A Call That Changed Everything

Vaidya recalled the unforgettable moment he learned about the award. “January 25 was just another morning,” he said. “A call came, but my children had told me not to answer unknown numbers. I ignored it twice. On the third ring, I picked up. It was the Ministry of Home Affairs. When they asked, ‘Is it Arvind-ji?’ I said yes… and what they said next stunned me.”

The ministry informed him that he had been selected for the Padma Shri and asked if he would accept it. “For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak. Then I thought, who wouldn’t accept such an honour? I immediately said yes. From that moment, a new chapter of my life began.”

A Career Culminating in Glory

Vaidya described the award as the perfect culmination of his long journey. “I’ve been working for 60 years, even before television existed. There have been many ups and downs, but it has always been beautiful. This award feels like the crowning achievement. All I ever wanted was my audience’s love—and they have given it to me in abundance.”

He also spoke about the strong personal bonds he has built over the years. “I have a wonderful wife, great children, and lifelong friends. All the producers I’ve worked with—whether in theatre, films, or TV—became my friends. Acting and my wife are my two passions. I cannot function without either.”

Vaidya expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mentors and family. “Receiving the Padma Shri is pure fortune. I thank God, my late mentors Rambhau Joshi and Jaswant Thakar, my family, my friends, and of course, the Government of India.”

Team Anupamaa Celebrates the Honour

Producer praised Vaidya’s dedication. “It’s an honour that he receives this award while playing such a pivotal character for over five and a half years. Working with him is always a learning experience. His enthusiasm and discipline are unmatched. His stories of struggle and perseverance are inspiring.”

Lead actress Rupali shared her excitement: “I’ve known him since Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. On set, I jokingly call him ‘Padma Shri Bapuji.’ Now, he truly is Padma Shri Arvind Vaidya. We are extremely proud.”

Rupali also remembered late actor Satish Shah, posthumously honoured with the Padma Shri. “It was long overdue. Satish Kaka’s talent and versatility deserved this recognition. I only wish he had received it while alive. I’m grateful to the Government for honouring both Satish Kaka and Arvind Uncle—two people very close to my heart.”
