Goa, India – November 15, 2024 – Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker has been appointed as the Chairperson of the International Jury at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024, set to take place in Goa from November 20th to 28th, 2024.

Known for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, Ashutosh Gowariker is widely recognized for his compelling storytelling and successful films that have captivated audiences both in India and across the world. His 2001 epic Lagaan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and it won several prestigious global accolades, including the Screen International Award for Best Non-European Film at the European Film Awards. The film also garnered multiple audience awards at renowned international festivals such as Locarno, Leeds, NatFilm, Portland, and Bergen.

Gowariker’s cinematic legacy extends to other major works like Jodhaa Akbar, What’s Your Raashee?, and Mohenjo Daro, which have been celebrated at major international film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Locarno International Film Festival. Jodhaa Akbar received the Audience Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the São Paulo International Film Festival and was honored as Best Film at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia.

Festival Director Shekhar Kapur, who also serves as the President of IFFI, expressed his enthusiasm about Gowariker’s appointment, saying, “The chairperson of the International Jury must have a deep understanding of cinema, with the ability to appreciate diverse storytelling perspectives. Ashutosh’s films have masterfully showcased a variety of narratives, and we are honored that he has agreed to lead this year’s jury.”

In response to his appointment, Ashutosh Gowariker expressed his excitement, stating, “Cinema is constantly evolving, and there is no better place to witness this transformation than at a prestigious film festival. The International Film Festival of India serves as a platform to celebrate this ongoing evolution, and I am truly honored to be a part of it.”

He continued, “I would like to thank Festival Director Shekhar Kapur, the IFFI team, and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) for entrusting me with this important role. It is both a privilege and a joy to immerse myself in the world of cinema at such a vibrant event.”

The 55th edition of IFFI, organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in collaboration with the NFDC and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), promises a dynamic lineup of global films, showcasing a diverse array of voices and cinematic traditions. This year’s festival will bring together filmmakers, industry professionals, and cinema lovers from around the world for an unforgettable celebration of international cinema.
