Acclaimed German neo-noir period drama Babylon Berlin has wrapped shooting its fifth and final season. The concluding season is an action-packed eight-episode story arc set in early 1933, following the turbulent last days of the Weimar Republic and the birth of the Nazi regime. This season will be groundbreaking in how the true selves of its characters are unveiled amidst the most radical transformations in Germany’s bleakest historical era.
From its premiere in 2017 onward, Babylon Berlin was created by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Henk Handloegten; it received acclaim for being a high-end drama with international traction. The final season sees the reunion of lead actors Volker Bruch as Inspector Gereon Rath and Liv Lisa Fries as Charlotte Ritter in the center of an intriguing investigation amidst political upheaval and violence. It is adapted from the fifth novel, The March Fallen, by Volker Kutscher, continuing to explore the social and political chaos preceding Nazi power consolidation.
Filming ended after a decade, and with it, a significant close to one of Germany’s best-known television exports. According to the creators, this last installment encompasses the most dramatic moments of the decade: love, betrayal, desperation, and hope-things that come naturally when facing an uncertain future. Babylon Berlin is still a milestone series that has been sold into 140 territories around the world and is streaming on Netflix in the U.S., securing the series as both a cult favorite and an epic in historical drama.
