The Horror Sequel Doesn’t Live Up to Hype
“The Black Phone 2” didn’t connect with audiences over the weekend, making only $12 million in the US. This is a big drop from the $23.4 million debut of its predecessor in 2022. The Blumhouse Productions sequel, which brings Ethan Hawke back together with director Scott Derrickson, came in second place behind the movie that had been in first place for a while.
The horror sequel’s poor performance is a disappointing continuation of the franchise, especially since the first movie made $161 million worldwide on a small budget. Industry experts say that the lower turnout is because people are getting tired of franchises and there are more horror movies coming out.
Aziz Ansari’s “Good Fortune” is not good
Aziz Ansari’s first movie as a director, “Good Fortune,” did even worse, making only $3.8 million in 2,844 theaters. The comedy-drama, which starred Ansari, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogen, didn’t do well at the box office, coming in seventh.
The film’s poor reception makes us wonder how well mid-budget comedies can draw in today’s theaters, where people are more likely to prefer big-budget blockbusters or small, personal streaming experiences.
The Box Office Landscape Is Still Competitive
The results from the weekend show that original movies and sequels are still having trouble because people are becoming pickier about what they see in theaters. There are still a lot of big movies coming out in 2025, so studios will be keeping an eye on how much people want to see different types of movies.
