The highly awaited directorial debut of Boman Irani, The Mehta Boys, made its grand premiere on the red carpet this past weekend, marking the official start of the Chicago South Asian Film Festival (CSAFF). The eager audience greeted the well-known actor and his group with warmth as they made a spectacular entrance. The excitement of the evening was increased by Irani, who is renowned for his captivating charm, politely interacting with fans. A standing ovation was given to the film’s crew, suggesting that the project would be successful.
Irani spoke about the film’s beginnings on stage before the showing. He disclosed that the idea for The Mehta Boys originated many years ago during a discussion with filmmaker and producer Sujoy Ghosh. While I was sick with a fever, Sujoy visited my residence and gave me some suggestions. One of them was “The Mehta Boys,” a one-liner. Irani remarked, “I knew right away that I wanted to direct it. He also said thank you to Ghosh for sharing the story with him. Irani also mentioned that he frequently woke his wife Zenobia up in the middle of the night to read the sequences he had written for the early versions.
Irani added, “Everyone calls it a labour of love, but I’ll tell you the truth—it took 55 days to make,” as she thought back on the filming process. I credit my mother for introducing me to the world of film, even though I never really intended to become an actor or filmmaker.” “This film is about family, and family is love,” he said in closing, thanking his crew, his family, and the audience. Anikta Batra of Chakboald Ltd. and Danesh Irani of Irani Movietone, along with co-writer Alex Dinelaris and the film’s cast members Avinash Tiwary and Shreya Chaudhary, were present at the ceremony.
