“If you take her out, there is no Kalki,” says Ashwin as the film Kalki 2898 AD celebrates its anniversary

A year has gone by since Kalki 2898 AD released in theatres, and one picture still remains etched in the minds—Deepika Padukone walking through fire in a scene that joined the ranks of cinematic history. Her part as SUM-80 was powerful, poised, and unforgettable in Kalki 2898 AD.

The fire-walking scene, presented in the climax of Kalki 2898 AD, left audiences agog. Director Nag Ashwin recalled how it was shot in a hurry.
“We were short of time. Deepika had to leave for her flight. But when I watched the shot on the monitor, I knew—it was magic,” he explained.
He referred to it as his favorite scene:
“Sometimes the greatest iconic shots are a result of chance. This was one such occasion.”
“No Kalki Without Her”
Ashwin confirmed Deepika’s character was the backbone of the story. In Kalki 2898 AD, Deepika’s role was vital.
“Throughout the writing process, we were always asking—who cannot be cut out without the narrative breaking down? That was Deepika’s character,” he mentioned.
“If you cut her out, there is no story. No Kalki.”
