Gmail Update: Change Email Address Without Losing Data in India

Google has released a groundbreaking update that lets users change their main @gmail.com email address without having to make a new account or lose any data. This long-awaited feature puts an end to years of frustration for people who have had to use old or embarrassing usernames for years. The old address becomes an alias, which means that emails, contacts, Drive files, and photos are still easy to find.

The new guidance first shows up on Google’s Hindi support page, which means that it is being rolled out in India and other Hindi-speaking areas first. The old policy that “typically cannot be altered” for @gmail.com addresses is still shown on English support pages. This confirms that the service is being rolled out globally in stages. Indian users should be able to access it soon through their Google Account settings, and it should be fully available by the end of 2026.

In account settings, users can choose a new @gmail.com address. The old one will still work as an alias for logging into services like Drive, Maps, and YouTube. You don’t have to move data by hand anymore, which used to happen a lot when third-party apps broke during migrations. After the switch, Google says that Chromebooks, Google One sign-ins, and Remote Desktop will need a few extra steps.

This update lets professionals update their online identity and casual users get rid of old emails from their teenage years without any problems. It keeps access to the Google ecosystem smooth while putting security and continuity first. The rollout is happening slowly, so check your account settings from time to time to see if it’s available.
