Indraxi Kanjilal, best known for her role as Prarthana in the TV show Pushpa Impossible, shares her journey of overcoming early struggles in Mumbai’s competitive film industry.
A Dream to Act Since Childhood
Indraxi has always dreamed of being an actress. “I grew up watching TV shows with my mom and admired the actors,” she recalls. Though she planned to start her career at 18 after focusing on studies, her journey began much earlier. At age 3, she started modeling. But it wasn’t until after her 12th grade that she got her big break. “I got a call after watching Doctor Strange for an audition in Mumbai, and soon after, I landed Pushpa Impossible,” she shares.
Supportive Family but Big Challenges Ahead
Indraxi’s father, Mrinmoy Kanjilal, a producer in Kolkata, fully supported her decision to enter the industry. However, Indraxi wanted to work in the Hindi film industry, not Bengali cinema. “The challenge was finding the right opportunities,” she admits. In May 2022, she moved to Mumbai to pursue her dream.
Fears of Being Judged for Her Bengali Accent
When she first arrived in Mumbai, Indraxi feared her Bengali accent would be judged. “I was nervous about how people would react to my Hindi,” she says. During her mock shoot, she faced criticism for being inexperienced. “I didn’t know how to express emotions on camera or work with it properly,” she adds. However, she was determined to learn and grow.
Overcoming Emotional Struggles in a New City
The transition was tough. “I often felt like I was in a completely new world,” Indraxi admits. There were times when she cried alone, feeling isolated. “Being Bengali, I sometimes felt vulnerable, especially when people made fun of my accent,” she says. Over time, she learned not to let negativity affect her. “I realized I had to push through and focus on my growth.”
Mentors and Inspirations
Indraxi finds inspiration in global icons like Priyanka Chopra and Michelle Obama. “I admire Priyanka for how she represents herself globally as a feminist,” she says. “I’m not as graceful as her yet, but I’m learning.” Michelle Obama’s influence on women’s empowerment also inspires her. “She’s a role model for how to present yourself with confidence,” she adds.
The Road Ahead
With three years of experience in the industry, Indraxi is optimistic about her future. “There’s still a lot to learn, but I’m excited for what’s to come,” she says. Indraxi’s journey is a testament to perseverance and following your dreams, no matter the hurdles.
