On Wednesday, the hip-hop mogul, whose real name is Shawn Carter, spoke about the scandal on Roc Nation’s official X account (formerly Twitter). An anonymous person named Jane Doe filed a lawsuit against Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs, saying they attacked her at an afterparty after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards when she was only 13. The shocking claims came out at the same time as Diddy’s own growing federal investigations, which put even more pressure on the top people in the music business.
But the case fell apart quickly. Last week, Jane Doe’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, said that the case would be dropped voluntarily because the plaintiff had received threats and wanted to avoid “the emotional toll of prolonging this matter.” Buzbee made it clear that no money was exchanged and hinted that the real Jane Doe would come forward and file again.
Jay-Z didn’t wait long to respond. His statement said, “The person who said I did something wrong has already admitted to making it all up.” “She just wants to use my fame to make easy money off of me. I am not that guy. These claims are so bad and are just looking for money and fame. They put my family’s safety and my businesses’ health at risk.”
He went on to attack Buzbee directly, saying, “Mr. Buzbee should be ashamed of himself, especially as a lawyer, for filing a claim that he knew was false.” Jay-Z said that the lawyer was using more than 120 sexual assault cases against Diddy to get attention, calling it a “money grab” and a “publicity stunt.”
Roc Nation agreed and asked people to be calm during the “circus-like” media frenzy. The label’s statement confirmed Jay-Z’s innocence and his promise to keep his loved ones safe from “defamatory allegations.”
Jay-Z has a net worth of more than $2.5 billion thanks to businesses like Roc Nation, Tidal, and Armand de Brum. This news is a big win for him. But it shows that hip-hop is going through bigger changes, with Diddy’s raids and lawsuits hanging over everything.
Fans and people who work in the industry are waiting to see what Buzbee does next, but for now, Jay-Z says, “The truth will always win.”
