Kara Braxton, who won the WNBA championship twice, died at the age of 43 in a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia. Cobb County Police say that the accident happened on Saturday night when her 2023 Ford Mustang hit a concrete median on Interstate 285 near Cobb Parkway.
Around 5 p.m., Braxton was driving north when she lost control, hit the median, and came to a stop on the left shoulder. She was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital right away, but she died soon after. The authorities are still looking into what happened, and no new information has been made public yet.
The 6-foot-6 center played in the WNBA for 10 years and won titles with the Detroit Shock in 2006 and 2008. She also played for the Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury, and New York Liberty. In 2007, she was named an All-Star and in 2005, she was named to the All-Rookie Team. Braxton was a star at the University of Georgia before he went pro. He won the SEC Freshman of the Year award in 2002.
Her son, Jelani Thurman, who was a national champion at Ohio State, wrote a touching post with a picture of her as a child in her jersey, saying he would miss his “queen.” The WNBA called her a “10-season veteran” and sent their condolences to her family, friends, and teammates. The New York Liberty and other teams praised her lasting impact on women’s basketball.
