We Are Faheem & Karun, the latest film from acclaimed filmmaker Onir, has made history by being selected as the only Indian feature for the prestigious British Film Institute’s (BFI) Flare 2025. It will screen at the 39th edition of the BFI Flare LGBTQIA+ Film Festival in London, on March 20 and 22, 2025.

A Groundbreaking Queer Love Story

Onir’s film is the first Kashmiri-language feature to be showcased at BFI Flare. It tells the story of Karun, a security guard from Kerala, and Faheem, a Kashmiri college student. Their love story unfolds in the politically charged region of Gurez, Kashmir, making it a unique and timely narrative.

A Milestone for Kashmiri Representation

The film is a significant step in the global representation of Kashmiri culture. Onir expressed pride in the diverse cast, which includes both Kashmiri actors and Akash Menon from Kerala. The cast features Mir Tawseef, Mir Salman, Bashir Lone, and Sana Javeid, who will join Onir at the London screening.

Deepa Mehta’s Support and Praise

Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta is presenting We Are Faheem & Karun and shared her admiration for the film. “The themes of love, friendship, and duty, set against geopolitical conflict, touched me deeply,” she said. “In a challenging world, films like this remind us of our shared humanity.”

A Landmark Moment for Queer and Kashmiri Cinema

We Are Faheem & Karun is set to make waves in both queer cinema and Kashmiri filmmaking. Its selection at BFI Flare 2025 is a significant achievement for inclusive storytelling and diverse representation in the film industry.
