Elephanta Island: A Cultural Treasure at Risk

Elephanta Island, home to ancient rock-cut temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, has been a symbol of India’s cultural heritage since the 6th century. Originally called Gharapuri, meaning “City of Caves,” the island’s remarkable sculptures suffered damage in the 17th century when the Portuguese used them for target practice.

Ek Saath Foundation’s Restoration Efforts

Pragya Kapoor’s Ek Saath Foundation is spearheading the restoration of Elephanta Island. The foundation’s efforts include not only cultural preservation but also environmental sustainability. Their work involves cleaning up the island, recycling waste, and restoring the ancient temples to their former glory.

The foundation has made significant strides in preserving Elephanta’s natural environment. So far, they have recycled over 10,000 kg of waste and removed 500+ bags of marine litter. Additionally, they’ve neutered 49 community dogs and installed 58 dustbins, with more on the way.
