On this day, we traditionally visit the Gurdwara to mark Guru Nanak’s birthday. Lighting candles is a big part of the celebration, and it fills the air with happiness and excitement, much like any other joyous occasion,” she said.

For Shivangi, Guru Nanak Jayanti is not just a celebration but also a day of reflection and gratitude. “The atmosphere at the Gurdwara is so festive and spiritual. Everyone gathers, lights candles, and comes together to celebrate. It’s a day of prayers, joy, and community bonding,” she shared. The Gurdwara is beautifully decorated, with lights and prayers filling the air, creating a serene and uplifting environment for all.
Guru Nanak Ji’s Teachings in Daily Life
Shivangi also emphasized how Guru Nanak’s teachings continue to shape her life. “Guru Nanak Ji’s messages revolve around peace, happiness, and confidence. Celebrating his birthday fills us with a sense of calm and positivity. We truly believe his blessings bring these qualities into our lives,” she explained.

Family Traditions: Making Prasad and Lighting Candles
While preparing kadha prasad (a sweet offering) isn’t mandatory, Shivangi shared that it is a beloved family tradition. “We make a special prasad at home, which is sweet and meaningful for the occasion. Afterward, we head to the Gurdwara where prasad is distributed to all,” she said.
Shivangi noted the deep significance of sharing prasad. “It’s believed to be blessed, and eating it together brings a sense of joy and togetherness. It’s a beautiful part of the celebration, bringing families closer,” she added.
Cherished Childhood Memories of Guru Nanak Jayanti
Shivangi fondly recalled her childhood memories of Guru Nanak Jayanti in Delhi. “I remember the grand and lively celebrations we had in Delhi. One of the most memorable parts of the day was the Prabhat Pheri—an early morning procession where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed on a decorated truck, and devotees walk ahead, cleaning the roads to ensure the path is pure,” she said, describing the scene with a sense of nostalgia.
“As the procession moved, more people joined in, creating a joyous and spiritual atmosphere. It was such a beautiful experience, and I cherish those memories deeply,” Shivangi continued.
Although Shivangi now resides in Mumbai, she continues to celebrate the day with the same devotion. “Here in Mumbai, I miss the grand Prabhat Pheris, but we still go to the Gurdwara in the evening to light candles. At home, we prepare prasad and celebrate in our own way. It’s a tradition every Punjabi family holds dear, and we keep the spirit of the occasion alive, no matter where we are,” she concluded.
