Mumbai, April 30, 2025 – Ace casting director Shruti Mahajan, known for films like Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Mary Kom, opened up in an exclusive IMDb interview about her decade-long journey in Bollywood and what makes an actor truly stand out.

She also revealed behind-the-scenes insights into her upcoming projects—including Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-awaited film, ‘Love & War’, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

Working With India’s Finest Filmmakers

Mahajan expressed gratitude for collaborating with acclaimed directors.

“I feel lucky to work with legends like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, R. Balki, Prakash Jha, and Alankrita Shrivastava,” she said.

Her current slate includes:

  • Love & War by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
  • Prakash Jha’s series Laal Batti and his next film
  • R. Balki’s next film
  • Bandra Christmas by Alankrita Shrivastava
  • Excel Entertainment’s Ground Zero

Breaking Down the Casting Process

According to Mahajan, casting begins with understanding the director’s vision. The script becomes the guiding force.

Actors are grouped into:

  • Lead roles
  • Primary roles
  • Secondary and tertiary characters

Casting leads takes the longest, involving look tests, chemistry checks, and repeated discussions with the director.

What Makes an Actor Click On Screen?

Talent isn’t everything, Mahajan said. “It’s acting, screen presence, and something extra—the X-Factor.”

This rare quality, she noted, can’t be explained. “You feel it instantly—it’s what makes an actor memorable.”

Spotting the X-Factor in Real Life

One memorable moment was casting Gulshan Devaiah for Ram Leela.

“I saw him outside a café in Versova,” she recalled. “There was something about his walk and energy. I asked if he was an actor. He thought I was joking—but Mr. Bhansali cast him without an audition.”

She also praised:

  • Richa Chadha for her distinct style and presence
  • Pratibha Ranta, who first auditioned for Heeramandi before being noticed in Laapataa Ladies

Casting Against Type: Breaking Stereotypes

Mahajan shared how casting can change careers.

Supriya Pathak, known for her comic role in Khichdi, stunned everyone with her powerful audition for Ram Leela.

“She came with baggage, but also hunger,” Mahajan said. “She proved herself with grace.”

Bobby Deol, once seen as a romantic hero, surprised many with his role in Aashram.

“It was a proud moment as a casting director,” she added.

Manisha Koirala’s Return in Heeramandi

Casting Manisha Koirala in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar was a full-circle moment.

Bhansali wanted a known face with elegance and depth. “They worked together in Khamoshi and shared a great bond,” Mahajan said. “She was in Nepal during COVID but agreed to meet on Zoom. After that, it was a done deal.”
