On December 8, 2025, in Brooklyn federal court, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering related to an alleged scheme to rig NBA bets. Prosecutors say the 31-year-old point guard gave friends insider information to help them make money betting on his performance. This includes a March 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans, in which he played for just over nine minutes before leaving with a foot injury. Rozier, who was released on a $3 million bond secured by his Florida home, gave up his passport and can only travel to Florida, Ohio, and New York.
Federal investigators noticed strange betting patterns on Rozier’s under props during the 2023 game. This was part of a larger FBI investigation that led to the arrest of 34 people, some of whom had connections to Mafia families. Rozier was arrested in Orlando on October 23, 2025, while on an NBA road trip. He has been on indefinite unpaid leave from the league since then, and an arbitration hearing is set for December 17. James Trusty, his lawyer, asked for a quick trial and said he was not guilty, pointing to his 2023 NBA clearance.
The scandal is similar to the Jontay Porter betting ban, which raised questions about the integrity of the league. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he was disturbed by the allegations that were linked to the league. Bam Adebayo, a teammate of Rozier’s on the Miami Heat, spoke out in support of him after he was arrested. However, Rozier missed games while the investigation was going on. Rozier had his best career numbers before the 2024 Hornets trade to the Heat, when he signed a four-year, $130 million deal.
