Paul Feig’s “The Housemaid” has become a huge hit at the box office, making more than $294.9 million around the world as of the weekend of January 23–25. This is more than the $289.6 million that “Bridesmaids” made (not adjusted). The R-rated psychological thriller, with Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway and Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, made a huge profit in a tough market after the pandemic, with a budget of $35 to $45 million.
This is Feig’s highest-grossing original run film, and it’s expected to make more than the $324 million that “Bridesmaids” made in its final run, including re-releases. It beats “Anyone But You” ($208-220 million) for Sweeney and ends her box office slump in 2025, making it her biggest lead role. The movie also beat out some Oscar nominees and “It Ends With Us” ($250 million) in 2024.
Feig directed the movie, which stars Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins along with the main actors. It tells the story of a maid who finds dark secrets in a rich family’s home. Even though the industry is skeptical about its theatrical success, it appeals strongly to women. Feig’s fifth movie to make over $100 million worldwide has a female lead, which supports his argument for movies over streaming.
Lionsgate said they are working on a sequel to “Housemaid Secret,” and Feig, Sweeney, and Morrone are likely to return. Strong legs (6.07 at home) and growth into 66 other countries mean more money is coming in.
