Trump Fires DHS Sec. Noem, Mullin Replaces Her

Kristi Noem is no longer the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, thanks to President Donald Trump. This is the first time he has fired a Cabinet member in his second term. The move comes after a lot of criticism from both sides of the aisle about her poor leadership, which included controversial ad campaigns and deadly incidents involving federal agents.

People were upset with Noem for approving a $220 million ad campaign funded by taxpayers that promoted self-deportation and featured her image a lot. The campaign didn’t go through the normal bidding process, which people say was given to friends. Congressional hearings showed that her testimony was bad, that she had problems with agencies like CBP and ICE, and that she wouldn’t apologize for calling two U.S. citizens killed by agents “domestic terrorists.”

Rumors of a personal relationship with a senior aide and poor management of staff hurt support even more. Democrats like Rep. Steven Horsford had already called for impeachment because of obstruction and rights violations.

Trump named Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin as Noem’s replacement. He praised her past work and gave her a new job as “Envoy for the Shield of the Americas” in a security project for the Western Hemisphere. The firing happened after weeks of pressure from both sides, including GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis are telling her to quit.

Noem’s time in office pushed Trump’s deportation and border policies forward, but operational failures, like a Minneapolis deployment that made both parties angry and DHS shutdowns that put 100,000 employees on leave, overshadowed them. Under new leadership, immigration enforcement will keep going strong.
