CNN streaming subscribers and pay TV users will be able to watch on-demand starting January 2 through CNN.com, apps, and cable platforms. Not yet available on Netflix, Prime Video, or HBO Max, only on CNN platforms.
The movie follows Chase’s rise from a strange college performer to an SNL star and a star of box office hits like National Lampoon’s Vacation. It mixes humor with his self-destructive behavior. Dan Aykroyd, Beverly D’Angelo, Goldie Hawn, Lorne Michaels, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Short, and Chase’s family are all interviewed, which shows the man behind the smile. Chase thinks about his regrets, like how he left SNL too soon.
In the documentary, Terry Sweeney, who used to be on SNL with Chase, calls him “rotten” for suggesting a sketch that made fun of AIDS. This starts their feud again. Director Zenovich calls Chase the “rudest” person he’s ever interviewed, even though former co-stars like Yvette Nicole Brown have spoken out against him. Even though the cast of Community and others like Steve Martin said no, the movie shows Chase’s unfiltered side.
Critics call it a “gripping, funny, and insightful” look at how fame affects a famous comedian. Zenovich’s honest but caring style shows Chase’s strengths and weaknesses, making it a warning story for new audiences.
