KALANK – Watching a Bollywood film in Barcelona had its own vibe for me, while I was on vacation.. To see it with not only our people, but with Spaniards, and watching “KALANK” with Spanish subtitles has its own charm. The film is a visual treat, with great art direction and choreography. Coming from a Karan Johar Production, one now expects that via giving Bhansali a tribute to this larger than life story, that is filled withe melodrama, and twist, filled with betrayal.

But that is the problem wirh “KALANK”. the film is filled with too many things that makes the plot go haywire’s. It is 20 borrowed themes from Hollywood & Bollywood to make this a film one mega hotch potch of a film. If you have seen any of these films from “Titanic”, “Umrao Jaan”,”Devdas”, “1947 – Earth” “Laawaris”- “Trishul”, “Mili”, “Maang Bharo Sajna”, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, to even ‘The Gladiator”, with Russell Crow, makes “KALANK” what it is.   Let me be frank when did people have bull fights before the partition in India? I found it hard to believe. Varun Dhawan needed to this side business to make some more money??. Playing the role of Zafar, actor Varun Dhawan as an illegitimate child of a Muslim courtesan dancer played by Madhuri Dixit lacked something for me. I felt rather the parallel story between Aditya Roy Kapoor, and Sonakshi Sinha as “Roop” – The dying wife’s role could have been a more focus taken by its director. But why dissect the film. It is what it is. The film gets a 2 and a half star for the solely on it visuals and the costumes.
