SHAKUNTALA DEVI – She was known as the “Human Computer”. I had remembered the ads that would come on the local Indian channel in New York, when I was little. She was an astrologer as well. Many celebrities and politicians would seek her blessings. She was indeed a mathematical genius, and to have Vidya Balan take on the role of “SHAKUNTALA DEVI” was indeed spot on.

Many may not know that she had a turbulent relationship with her daughter, after she divorced her husband in the 70’s. You could say she was like a “Mommie Dearest” to her daughter, It was her way…or the highway. Directed brilliantly by Anu Menon, and having a great screenplay the film does not bore you, It is very fast paced and packed with emotions for a 2 hrs and 7 minute film. The art direction is also worth a mention as well, which captures her life in retrospect with detail – to the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and all the way to 2001. That does add depth and mood indeed to her biopic.

Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra in the mother & daughter relationship are both great in their tug of war with each other. The story is poignant and shows life is too short to have resentment. Forgive and forget, and have no regrets are the real square root, to get the correct answer in having a good life. The film gets a 3 and a half star recommendation, and is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime. Courtesy Awesome TV & Being Filmy!
